Book launch: O Pide — Uma tragédia em duas farsas
Release date: July 2017
Miguel Oliveira’s new book O Pide will be released throughout the month of July 2017. PIDE stands for “Polícia Internacional da Defesa do Estado”. It was the political police under Salazar’s dictatorship. When Caetano took over the PIDE was officially extinguished and substituted by the DGS (Direcção Geral de Segurança). Yet the DGS essentially had the same functions and carried on the work of the PIDE. It is claimed that the latter was trained by the German GESTAPO in Nazi torture methods. Later on the CIA trained these men in the misuse of drugs (like LSD) to further refine their torture techniques… Even though the plot of the play is made up, it is nevertheless based on true testimonials of witnesses of the PIDE’s ill-treatments, real victims of torture and violence, who suffered tremendously under the so-called “Estado Novo” (New Estate)...
